Shanghai: Beyond Our Expectations

Shanghai was one of the biggest surprises of our recent China trip. We visit Shenzhen quite often, so we thought we knew what to expect from a major Chinese city. Shanghai, however, felt surprisingly different.
From its spotless streets to its futuristic skyline, the city left a lasting impression on us. Add incredible food, luxurious Didi rides and plenty of family-friendly attractions, and we quickly understood the appeal. This was a city that deserved more than a quick visit.
First Impressions of Shanghai
One of the first things we noticed was how clean Shanghai felt. Electric vehicles were everywhere, and we saw remarkably little visible pollution during our stay. The streets felt modern, organised and surprisingly easy to navigate once we found our bearings.
Then there were the cars. We used Didi for almost every journey. It was that convenient. Our Didi rides were quick, comfortable and often surprisingly luxurious. Getting around felt effortless compared with what we expected from such a huge city. Honestly, we now want one of those cars at home!
Shanghai felt modern without losing its character. Historic neighbourhoods sat alongside towering skyscrapers, while traditional food and contemporary city life blended together naturally. It was a fascinating contrast, and one of the things we loved most about visiting.
It was mid Autumn and the weather was pleasant compared to neighbouring towns, hovering around mid to late 20s.

Staying in Xintiandi with the Kids
We based ourselves in Xintiandi, staying at the Ascot serviced apartments. China doesn't do Airbnb, so next best option was serviced apartments. For a family travelling with children, having extra space makes a real difference. The apartment gave us room to relax after busy days exploring the city.
The washing facilities were another huge bonus. When you're travelling with kids and moving between destinations, laundry quickly becomes part of the holiday routine. Being able to wash clothes without finding a laundromat made life much easier.
Xintiandi was also a great base for experiencing Shanghai. We could enjoy the city before heading out to explore its famous attractions, historic streets and incredible food scene. Everything was at our doorstep.
Choosing accommodation that works for the whole family helped make our stay more comfortable.

Exploring Shanghai: From Historic Streets to Theme Parks
Shanghai offers a fascinating mix of experiences, and we tried to enjoy a little of everything.
The Bund was a highlight for its iconic waterfront views and striking skyline. It captures the contrast between Shanghai's historic architecture and its futuristic side. We also explored the Old Town near the Yuyuan Garden area. Here, traditional architecture and busy streets offered a different perspective on the city.
For the kids, Shanghai Disneyland and Shanghai Wild Animal Park were both on our itinerary. Both exceeded our expectations and became highlights of the trip.
We also ventured beyond Shanghai on day trips to Suzhou and Zhouzhuang. Both destinations offered a change of pace from the city's modern skyline, and a glimpse of traditional Chinese culture. These excursions reminded us that Shanghai makes a great base for exploring more of the surrounding region.

The Food Alone Is Worth the Trip
If there's one thing Shanghai delivered, it was incredible food. We enjoyed local Shanghainese cuisine, indulged in Peking duck and made room for all-you-can-eat barbecue.
Xiao long bao quickly became a recurring feature of our meals. We also drank plenty of bubble tea along the way. Some of the best experiences came from simply sitting down and enjoying another meal. The variety was fantastic, and the value often surprised us.
One restaurant stood out enough to deserve its own dedicated review: Ren He Guan, known for its Michelin recognition and Shanghainese cuisine. We'll share more about that experience separately.
For now, let's just say we certainly left Shanghai a few kilos heavier!
