🍷Wine of the Month – October

Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Brut NV

Elgy-Ouriet

Egly-Ouriet is a family-owned Champagne producer based in Ambonnay, in France’s prestigious Montagne de Reims.

Led by Francis Egly, the estate has become a benchmark for grower Champagne, with a focus on vineyard expression. Old vines, carefully controlled yields and meticulous vineyard work help shape the estate’s distinctive wines. In the cellar, gentle extraction and extended ageing on lees build texture, depth and complexity.

The resulting Champagnes are known for their intensity, structure and expressive character, balancing richness with freshness. For Champagne lovers, Egly-Ouriet offers a compelling expression of grower craftsmanship and the distinctive terroirs of the Montagne de Reims.

The Wine

Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Champagne is a rich, structured expression of grower Champagne, showcasing the character of its prestigious vineyards.

Expect layers of ripe citrus, orchard fruit, toasted brioche and subtle nuttiness, balanced by freshness and a fine, persistent mousse.

What makes it Grand Cru?

Grand Cru is the highest vineyard classification in Champagne, historically awarded to villages recognised for their exceptional vineyard quality. Egly-Ouriet sources its Grand Cru Champagne from celebrated villages including Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay, in the Montagne de Reims.

Tasting Notes

This Pinot Noir-led Champagne balances richness with freshness, making it a compelling choice for relaxed afternoons or food pairing.

Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Brut NV opens with aromas of ripe pear, lemon zest, tangerine and freshly baked bread, complemented by praline and subtle floral notes (Prince Wine Store).

The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with layered fruit, vibrant acidity and a chalky structure (Qantas Wine).

Why It Was Our Pick of the Month

Egly-Ouriet has been a favourite since Marc Malouf first introduced us to the producer. Since then, we've continued to appreciate the house's distinctive Champagnes. So, opening this Grand Cru with a mate on a casual afternoon in Hong Kong was a fitting reminder of why we love these Grower Champagnes. Rich, complex and beautifully balanced, it delivered the depth and character we have come to expect from the house. Sometimes the best bottles aren't saved for grand occasions. They're shared with good company, nice afternoon, simply because the moment feels right.

Food Pairing + Occasion

The wine's richness and freshness make it a versatile partner at the table. Pair it with freshly shucked oysters, lobster, scallops or sashimi. Roast chicken, creamy cheeses and dishes featuring mushrooms also complement its savoury depth.

This is a Champagne for when you want something special without needing a formal celebration. At around A$300 a bottle, it's a considered purchase, best saved for people and moments worth sharing.
