Dining at Civico 47: A Charming Italian Restaurant with BYO Wine Options

If you’re searching for a memorable Italian dining experience in Sydney with BYO wine options, Civico 47 deserves a spot on your list and ours (The Ultimate Guide to Sydney’s Best BYO Restaurants). Led by Executive Chef Matteo Zamboni, whose background includes experience in both Michelin restaurants in Italy and Japan and hatted restaurants across Australia, nestled in the charming streets of Paddington, this cosy neighbourhood restaurant delivered one of those Saturday night dining experiences that reminds you why Sydney’s Italian food scene continues to thrive.
First Impressions at Civico 47 Paddington
We arrived just before 6pm and were the very first guests through the door. At that hour, the restaurant felt calm and intimate, but within 15 minutes the room transformed completely. Tables quickly filled, wine was flowing and the warm buzz of conversation brought the entire venue to life.
It’s clear that Civico 47 has built a loyal local following and after our visit, it’s easy to understand why. The atmosphere feels authentic, welcoming and effortlessly charming without trying too hard.

BYO Wine and Corkage at Civico 47
One of the reasons Civico 47 initially caught our attention was its BYO wine policy. For Sydney diners constantly searching for restaurants that allow you to bring your own wine, especially on weekends, it’s refreshing to see a venue still offering corkage on a Saturday night.
Corkage was priced at $50 per bottle which is certainly on the premium end, but the flexibility to BYO at all in Paddington is worth noting for wine lovers planning a special dinner. If you enjoy discovering wine-friendly restaurants around Sydney, Civico 47 is definitely worth adding to your list.
In the end, we decided not to bring our own bottle and instead explored the restaurant’s wine list, a decision we absolutely didn’t regret.
The 2019 Lunaria Montepulciano Pairing
To pair with the chef’s menu, we ordered a half carafe of the 2019 Lunaria Coste di Moro Montepulciano from Abruzzo. Rich, smooth and packed with dark fruit character, the Montepulciano became one of the highlights of the evening.
If you love Italian red wines with food, this was a perfect example of how the right pairing can elevate an entire dining experience. The wine paired exceptionally well with the beef carpaccio, bringing savoury depth and warmth without overpowering the dish. Every sip seemed to enhance the next bite.

Standout Dishes from the Chef’s Menu
Then came the duck, easily the standout dish of the night. Could this be Sydney’s best duck dish?
Perfectly cooked with crisp skin and rich flavour throughout, it was the type of plate that instantly commands attention at the table. The Montepulciano’s earthy notes and gentle tannins balanced the richness beautifully.
Dessert was equally memorable. The limoncello sponge with pistachio cream delivered the perfect finish to the meal. Bright citrus notes from the limoncello kept the dessert light and refreshing, while the pistachio cream added just enough richness and texture to make every bite irresistible.

Is Civico 47 Worth Visiting?
For anyone researching the best BYO restaurants in Sydney, particularly Italian restaurants in Paddington, Civico 47 is well worth considering.
While the corkage may be slightly higher than some venues, the quality of the food, thoughtful wine offerings and warm dining experience make it a standout addition to Sydney’s growing list of wine-friendly restaurants. Whether you’re planning a date night, dinner with friends or simply looking for a cosy Italian restaurant in Paddington, Civico 47 delivers a dining experience that feels both relaxed and memorable.
Italian Wine School at Civico 47
Beyond the restaurant itself, Civico 47 has also become a destination for Sydney wine lovers through its popular Italian Wine School series. Hosted throughout the year, the events explore different Italian wine regions with curated wine tastings paired alongside a multi-course menu from Executive Chef Matteo Zamboni, guided by Sommelier Luca Collardini.
The concept feels perfectly aligned with the restaurant’s philosophy, approachable, regional Italian food paired with thoughtfully selected wines that showcase the diversity of Italy’s wine culture.
Upcoming events currently include a focus on Puglia, continuing Civico 47’s region-by-region journey through Italy. For anyone looking to deepen their appreciation for Italian wine in Sydney, these dinners look like an excellent way to explore lesser-known varietals and regional food pairings in a relaxed setting.
