About Best’s Wines
Best’s Wines is celebrating 160 years in Great Western in 2026. The story began in 1866, when Henry Best established Concongella Vineyard. He planted the first vines there just two years later.
Today, Best’s remains one of Australia’s oldest family-owned wineries. Only two families have owned the property since its beginnings. The Thomson family has been custodians since purchasing Best’s in 1920.
The historic Concongella Vineyard remains at the heart of the winery. It includes some of Australia’s oldest surviving vineyard plantings. Among them are Shiraz vines planted in 1868.
Best’s has built its reputation on Great Western’s cool-climate style. Its wines are known for elegance, structure and impressive longevity. The winery continues to combine heritage with modern winemaking.
After 160 years, Best’s remains deeply connected to Great Western.
Its history is now an important part of Australian wine heritage.
2021 Best’s Bin 0 Shiraz
Bin No. 0 is one of Best’s most historic wines. The name has appeared on its labels for over 100 years. Shiraz has been produced at Best’s since the late 1800s.
The 2021 vintage comes from three blocks at Concongella Vineyard. They include plantings from 1966, 1970 and the 1990s.
The fruit is hand-selected and fermented in small batches. It is then matured in carefully selected barrels underground.
The wine shows classic Great Western Shiraz character. Expect blue and black fruits with pepper, clove and cedar.
Red cherry, cranberry, blackberry and bramble add further complexity.
Dried herbs and warming spice add savoury detail.
The palate is rich without losing its cool-climate freshness. Chocolatey tannins provide structure and a long finish.
It is an age-worthy Shiraz with up to 20 years ahead.
