Founded in 1982 by legendary winemaker Stephen George in the cool-climate Piccadilly Valley of the Adelaide Hills, Ashton Hills has become one of Australia’s benchmark producers of Pinot Noir. Perched 570 metres above sea level near Mount Lofty, the three-hectare vineyard helped pioneer the Adelaide Hills wine region and earned acclaim for its meticulous clonal experimentation, with Stephen trialling more than 26 Pinot Noir clones over three decades.
Today, Ashton Hills continues its pursuit of purity, finesse and site expression under winemaker Liam Van Pelt, who worked closely alongside Stephen before taking the reins. The winery’s Reserve and Estate Pinot Noirs consistently receive outstanding reviews and accolades from Halliday Wine Companion, James Suckling and The Real Review, while James Halliday famously described Ashton Hills as “the one Grand Cru of the state.” With the support of Wirra Wirra Vineyards, Ashton Hills remains one of Australia’s most respected cool-climate wine estates.
