Sorrenberg

Description

Sorrenberg is a three-hectare, family-owned vineyard on the outskirts of Beechworth, where Barry and Jan Morey have been making wines since planting the first vines in 1985 and their first vintage in 1989. Surrounded by native forest and bordered by Stony Creek, the vineyard’s cool climate, granitic soils, and north-facing slopes provide an ideal environment for producing elegant, site-driven wines.

From the beginning, Sorrenberg has embraced a hands-on approach in both the vineyard and winery, with an emphasis on low yields, traditional winemaking and allowing each season to express itself. Certified biodynamic by Demeter since 2008, the vineyard has long been farmed in harmony with nature.

The Morey family’s winemaking heritage stretches back more than 500 years to Germany’s Mosel Valley. Barry’s grandfather, Jacob Barzen, brought that tradition to Australia, and today Barry and Jan’s son, Bernard, continues the next chapter, working alongside his parents to craft thoughtful wines that reflect both their vineyard and its unique sense of place.
