Fresh out of Marananga, the 2023 Ben Murray Mataro feels like one of those quiet releases that doesn’t stay quiet for long. Small-batch, minimal noise, but plenty going on in the glass.
It opens dark and brooding with black cherry, mulberry and that classic cola spice, layered with dried herbs, subtle earth and a faint gamey edge. There’s depth here, but it’s controlled with nothing overblown.
The palate is where it really lands. Structured but not heavy, with fine, gritty tannins giving it shape, while a savoury, almost ferrous line cuts through the fruit and keeps everything honest. There’s a tension to it that makes it seriously drinkable.
Finishes long, dry and moreish, the kind of wine that sneaks up on you and suddenly the bottle’s gone.
A proper Marananga expression, but with a bit more finesse than you might expect. If you know, you know… and if you don’t, now’s a good time to get across it.
